Georges River Council has met its target to source 100% renewable energy in its operations by 2025, three years ahead of schedule as a new contract with electricity retailer, ZEN Energy is due to commence in July 2022.
The deal was brokered late last year by the Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC) on behalf of 25 Councils and leverages the significant scale of electricity consumed across participating energy consuming Council facilities and sites.
Mayor of Georges River Council, Nick Katris said "Council is committed to protecting and enhancing the natural environment by reducing our impact.
"Electricity is Council's largest source of carbon emissions with a consumption of over 9 million kWh in in the financial year ending June 2021, equating to more than 6,000 tonnes Co2-e or 77% of Council's total operational footprint.
"This landmark deal is a significant step toward meeting Council's target of net zero emissions by 2025."
Electricity supply will be covered by renewable energy from the Moree, Hillston and Nevertire Solar Farms, all located within NSW.
