Georges River, Transport NSW Launch Permit Pilot Program

Georges River Council

Georges River Council is excited to announce its participation in the Permit/Plug/Play Pilot program, an initiative led by Transport for NSW in partnership with 16 councils across the state.

As part of the NSW Government's Vibrant Streets Package, the Pilot program is designed to transform streets into thriving, community-centric places by simplifying the process of delivering street-based events.

Through the Permit/Plug/Play Pilot program, Georges River Council has been awarded a grant of $500,000 for "Streamlining Events held in Georges River: Enhancing Accessibility and Efficiency" to identify and streamline the processes for 3 key streets in the Local Government Area.

The Permit/Plug/Play Pilot Program focuses on reducing the cost and complexity associated with street-based events, creating a more efficient and accessible system for road closures and events.

NSW Minister for Roads John Graham said: "When I first came to office and was briefed on the cost of opening a street for an event, I was told it could cost up to $122,000 on each occasion. I couldn't believe it. We are now fixing this."

"We want to make these events cheaper and easier for councils to run, so they can host them more often. These events bring communities together, having fun and supporting local businesses without blowing the family budget," Minister Graham said.

By addressing local problems with local solutions, the Pilot program will help energise streets with cultural, economic, and social activities that benefit the community, businesses, and the creative sector.

As part of the broader NSW Government's $19.7 million Vibrant Streets Package, this initiative is a strategic investment in the future of community streets and local culture.

Key goals include enhancing council processes, cutting down event-related costs for proponents, and making streets a central hub for local events, encouraging a stronger sense of community connection.

Georges River Council is proud to be part of this forward-thinking program and looks forward to creating more vibrant and dynamic public spaces for the community.
