The goal of the European Green Deal is to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050. The EU member states have committed to the energy transition and to achieving this goal. A team from Forschungszentrum Jülich's Institute of Climate and Energy Systems - Jülich Systems Analysis has investigated how this can be achieved. In a study with high temporal and spatial resolution, they show how Europe can best exploit its potential. The study reveals a number of important findings, including the fact that nuclear power will only have a role to play if investment costs fall significantly. In addition, global hydrogen imports will only become more significant if there is a sluggish expansion of renewables and grid capacities - or if import prices of less than € 3 per kilogram can be expected in the short term.
