Getting Behind Our Tasmanian Athletes Going For Gold

Nic Street, Minister for Sport and Events

Thirteen Tasmanians will represent our state on the world stage at this year's Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Minister for Sport and Events, Nic Street, said Tasmanians have so much pride in our sporting heroes.

"I know we'll all be watching with bated breath as our Tasmanian athletes represent Australia with great pride", Minister Street said.

"Gold may well be the pinnacle, but there's no doubt that simply making the squad is something that deserves to be celebrated."

The Tasmanian cohort of the Australian team includes five-time Olympian Eddie Ockenden, as well as cyclist Georgia Baker, who will be making her third appearance. Alexandra Viney has been selected for her second Paralympic team.

"It's also exciting to see our next generation, such as Max Giuliani in the swimming, and Jacob Despard in Athletics, making their way to the world stage, too", Minister Street said.

"From hockey to swimming, cycling, rowing and basketball, Tasmanians are well represented in Paris.

"Good luck to Tasmania's athletes, and the rest of the Aussie team representing our country as they head off to compete."

The opening ceremony for the Paris 2024 Olympics is on July 26, and the Paralympics on August 28.

Under the Tasmanian Government's 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we are investing in local sporting facilities to ensure that our future Olympians have what they need to set them up for success.
