Getting Creative With Traffic Management

In response to community concern for pedestrian safety on Brighton's narrow Allard Street bridge, we've made some improvements to minimise risk for all bridge users.

The colourful, eye-catching "Road Garden" was created and installed by local artist Julia Gorman across the bridge, indicating the shared-use zone. Decorative road designs have been associated with lower vehicle speeds and developing creative integrated solutions for engineering and road safety issues benefits all road users.

To further slow traffic we've installed speed bumps on either side of the bridge and worked with the Department of Transport and Planning to install a "shared zone" which has a speed limit of 10km/h, and gives priority to pedestrians. Improved bridge lighting is also helping to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles with better nighttime visibility.
