Getting Ready For Tasmania's Container Refund Scheme

Tasmanian Government

Tasmania's Container Refund Scheme is another step closer to starting with the mobilisation period now underway.

Minister for Parks and Environment, Nick Duigan, said he was looking forward to the scheme being operational by mid-next year.

"I think we can all agree we want to see less litter and less waste going to landfill," Minister Duigan said.

"It is estimated Recycle Rewards will reduce the amount of drink containers in litter by almost 50 per cent, and double recycling rates of eligible containers, which will reduce waste going into landfill and sustain the environment for future generations."

Once Recycle Rewards starts, people will receive a 10c refund for any eligible beverage container returned to a designated container refund point in Tasmania.

Minister Duigan has announced TasRecycle Limited will be the Scheme Coordinator and TOMRA Cleanaway Tasmania the Network Operator.

Minister Duigan said work to rollout and mobilise the scheme is now underway and there will be 49 container refund points available state-wide, making Recycle Rewards accessible for all Tasmanians.

"The Government is committed to a container recycling scheme that will work for the community and the environment, that provides opportunities for charities and community groups and maximises the number of containers returned."

Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's for Future is all about making Tasmania the best place to live, work and raise a family. That's what this is all about.

The Scheme Coordinator will run the administration and finance of the CRS while the Network Operator will manage the network of refund points across Tasmania.
