There are few things more special than watching our youngest loved ones wake up on Christmas morning to a bundle of presents under the tree.
It's something many of us take for granted, but it can also be a difficult time for those less fortunate in our community who aren't able to experience the simple joy of giving come the festive season.
It's why Council will again partner with Anglicare and St Vincent de Paul to launch the City of Wollongong Giving Tree Appeal, which calls for gift donations to be distributed to Illawarra families in time for Christmas.
Last year's appeal saw more than 1400 toys donated for children up to 16 years of age. While all contributions are appreciated, Council and its partners are asking those generous enough to please consider donations appropriate for kids 11-12 or older.
"We all enjoy the giving spirit of Christmas at this time of year," Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.
"It is a special time to be enjoyed, but unfortunately it is not so easy for all families, particularly those who, due to many different circumstances, may be struggling to provide those precious Christmas moments for their kids.
"It's why I urge anyone capable of doing so to donate to the Giving Tree Appeal. You may never see the joy it brings to a child lucky enough to receive your gift, but it can make an incredible difference and perhaps even create a memory that lasts a lifetime."
St Vincent de Paul Regional Director South Solange Frost said people need generosity now more than ever.
"Your act of kindness in donating a toy for a child in need will help alleviate the financial and emotional stress that many families in our community are experiencing," Ms Frost said.
"Since July, our St Vincent de Paul Wollongong members have assisted close to 6,000 people providing over half a million dollars in assistance. After years of a deepening cost of living crisis, we are seeing more families facing impossible choices about whether to put food on the table, pay the rent or keep the lights on.
"As Christmas approaches, those choices are even starker. Your generous donation will ease this burden and bring joy to a child at this difficult time of year."
Anglicare senior case worker Leanne Kennedy said The Giving Tree appeal is a wonderful opportunity to come together and support those in need in our local community.
"Every contribution can make a meaningful difference, bringing hope and joy for families facing challenges especially at this time of year," Ms Kennedy said.
"It's truly inspiring to see how small acts of generosity can grow into something so impactful."
