The McGowan Government is in discussions with cycling groups to organise a warm Western Australian welcome for local cyclist Jai Hindley, who won the prestigious Giro d'Italia this week.
The 26-year-old from Mindarie is one of just two Australian riders to win a Grand Tour, following Cadel Evans' 2011 Tour de France triumph.
Jai Hindley's cycling journey started at the Midland Cycling Club, racing on the road and the track at the Perth SpeedDome, operated by VenuesWest.
From there, he earned a Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) scholarship, with the WAIS program supporting him to graduate to the national under-23 team in Europe and ultimately a professional contract on the UCI World Tour.
His success follows his breakthrough performance at the 2020 edition of the race, where he won a stage and finished second overall.
As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:
"Like many Western Australians, I was absolutely delighted to see Jai Hindley win the Giro d'Italia.
"It's not every day that a Western Australian wins a Grand Tour, so it is appropriate that we organise a warm welcome for Jai when he returns to Perth later this year.
"The McGowan Government is in discussions with cycling groups and will make further announcements in due course."
