Global Health Transcultural Nursing Course Concludes in Madrid

This immersive course provided valuable cultural insight into Global Healthcare and the nurse's role in Europe.

On April 17, the twenty seniors from the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS) completed their final group presentations as part of the global Health Transcultural Nursing course, in which they spent two weeks abroad in Madrid, Spain at the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria during the winter intersession

The twenty students were divided into four groups and presented on different topics. The first group described their experience at Hospital Universitario del Sureste. They explained the type of institution, patients' demographics, and services they provide and compared them with US hospitals. Another group that spent their 2-weeks mostly at Hospital Universitario Quiron Salud Madrid spoke about the differences between public and private healthcare in Spain and some similarities with nursing in the United States. The third group focused on Nursing Education, the history of nursing in Spain, and its development over the years. They shared the career track for a typical nurse in Spain compared with US nurses and their career advancement and education. Last, the fourth group emphasized Spanish culture and the critical components of living in Spain. They all were happy to be able to have experienced this unique course. They verbalized that this experience positively impacted their professional and personal lives. The group will graduate from the University of Miami SOHNS this May 2023.
