Global Math Experts Gather at Sydney Conference

UNSW Gonski Institute for Education

More than 2000 delegates from around the world who share a passion for mathematics education research and mathematics teaching are gathering at the International Convention Centre in Sydney for the 15th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME-15) hosted by UNSW Sydney from July 7-14, 2024.

Held once every 4 years, ICME has been likened to the Olympics of mathematics education. It is the world's largest gathering of mathematicians, statisticians, mathematics education researchers, and teachers of mathematics.

The program features lectures, panels, discussion groups, and workshops on topics covering the teaching and learning of mathematics from early childhood to university, including the ways in which mathematics education can contribute to addressing society's greatest challenges, the role of technology in mathematics teaching and learning, and how teachers of mathematics can be best trained and supported.

Professor of Mathematics Education Kim Beswick, Director of the Gonski Institute for Education and Convenor of ICME-15, said the gathering was a unique chance for local minds to learn and engage with emerging and established mathematics leaders.

"ICME was last held in the Australia in 1984, so this event is truly a once in a generation opportunity for Australian participants to share their knowledge and to hear from world leading experts," Prof. Beswick said.
