Go Orange For Muscular Dystrophy

Guy Barnett, Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing

Tasmanians are encouraged to Go Orange this week as part of Muscular Dystrophy Tasmania's initiative to raise awareness and understanding of muscular dystrophy and allied neuromuscular conditions.

Minister for Heath, Mental Health and Wellbeing Guy Barnett said muscular dystrophy can be very debilitating for affected Tasmanians.

"There are around 1,000 Tasmanians living with muscular dystrophy, and initiatives like this are important to raise awareness while supporting important community organisations such as MDT," Minister Barnett said.

"There are a number of events planned across the State and a number of landmarks will light up orange in support, such as the Tasman Bridge and Wrest Point Casino in Hobart, Town Hall in Launceston, and the Paranaple Centre in Devonport.

"I encourage everyone in the community to Go Orange this week, and support MDT by registering for an event on their website - whether it's at school, work, or even a barbecue at home, you can play your part to raise awareness and support the great work MDT do for those who need it.

"The Tasmanian Government recognises the vital role that MDT plays for those affected by muscular dystrophy and allied neuromuscular conditions, which is why we have supported them with more than $100,000 in annual funding to assist people living with muscular dystrophy and their carers.

"We seek to find any way we can to improve health outcomes for Tasmanians, whether that is through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future or through targeted investments like this funding."

Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular, genetic disorder which results in the loss of muscle strength and function, and can affect people of all ages.
