Gold Coast's future leaders have celebrated 8 years to go until the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games at a special event at CBUS Stadium today.
The City's 170 strong Junior Council representing 37 schools converged on the future Olympic football venue for a day of workshops, inspiration and a bit of good old fashioned Aussie pride.
City of Gold Coast Acting Mayor Donna Gates who attended the event along with Olympic gold medallists Brooke Hanson and Sara Carrigan said it was clear excitement was building for Paris.
"It is always a special time every four years when the Olympics come around. We all walk a bit taller every time an Aussie performs well," Acting Mayor Gates said.
"And to think that in just 8 years the excitement will be right here, in our own backyard. It is just extraordinary. It will be here before we know it."
Acting Mayor Gates, Ms Hanson and Ms Carrigan joined the vocal group of year 10 and 11 students with Australia's favourite catch cry – Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi - before they created a figure 8 on the field.
"These are the Gold Coast's best and brightest. In 8 years to go we just may see them front and centre putting on our homegrown Olympics and Paralympics."
Councillor Gates reminded Gold Coasters they could cheer on the Aussies this weekend at Broadwater Parklands.
A live site with a big screen will be activated this Saturday (10am-9pm) and Sunday (10am-6pm) to watch the Paris Olympics. There will be free activities and food trucks.
Also, the City will light up in green and gold from tonight and throughout the games.
They include the Surfers Paradise sign, Isle of Capri Bridge, Broadbeach Sign and Q1.
