Goondiwindi's 4th Annual Sustainable Fishing Contest Returns

OzFish Unlimited

OzFish's Goodiwindi Chapter is gearing up for their fourth Goondiwindi Classic! The local catch-and-release fishing competition is on from Friday 7 to Sunday 9 June to raise funds for fish habitat restoration projects in the area.

OzFish Unlimited is a national not-for-profit supporting recreational fisher stewardship in habitat restoration and sustainable fishing practices. OzFish's Goondiwindi Chapter runs this community-driven initiative annually to make sustainable fishing practices fun, while fostering a deeper appreciation for local waterways.

In addition to the family-friendly fishing competition, participants will have the opportunity to contribute to the conservation efforts by targeting and removing invasive carp species for great prizes.

Nathan Turner, OzFish Goondiwindi Chapter President, says that community support for the competition grows each year.

"We're stoked to be hosting the Goondiwindi Classic for its fourth consecutive year, with local businesses, families, and fishing enthusiasts all getting in on the action," said Nathan.

"There are over $15,000 worth of prizes up for grabs thanks to the support of our wonderful sponsors.

This year we have added a female angler category to promote women in recreational fishing and show fishing is a sport for everyone," said Nathan.

Every person who registers will also go in a lucky entry draw to win a weekend away at the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

The prizes for adult competitors are awarded based on the length of the fish, which is to be submitted via a photograph and presented to officials during specified times over the weekend.

Participants must be present at the final presentation on the Sunday from 12.30pm to remain eligible for any prizes.

Ticket prices are $25 for an adult and $10 for kids. They can be purchased online, until 6pm Thursday 6 June, at https://ozfish.org.au/event/goondiwindi-classic-2024/
