As the Grand Old Party gathers in Milwaukee for its 2024 national convention, where former U.S. President Donald Trump will accept the Republican nomination for president tomorrow night, Rice University political scientist Mark Jones is available to discuss what to expect from the GOP coming out of the convention.
"Republicans will leave their national convention in Milwaukee more unified and focused on a common goal than at any time in the Trump era," said Jones, a professor of political science at Rice. "With very minor exceptions, the GOP is firmly united behind the candidacy of Donald Trump, a sharp contrast to the Democratic Party where a significant number of leading figures want to replace President Joe Biden as the party's nominee."
Jones noted that Trump now enjoys the glowing public support of a plethora of politicians who were once bitter rivals, ranging from 2016 Republican primary rivals Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio to 2024 primary rivals Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley.
"Trump and his fellow Republicans are feeling increasingly confident about victory in November, while many Democrats are increasingly pessimistic about their prospects for retaining control of the White House as well as of the U.S. Senate," Jones said.
