Goulburn Mulwaree Council has engaged Worley Consulting to undertake a Flood Risk Management Study (FRMS) focused on overland flow flooding in and around Goulburn. Overland flow flooding has not been studied and is not well understood. This type of flooding is typically caused by shorter intense bursts of rainfall which leads to excess stormwater runoff flowing through streets and properties towards defined watercourses. This can cause flooding when the amounts of water are beyond the capabilities of drainage systems and may result in property damage or pose a risk to human safety. Previous flood studies for the Goulburn area have focused on mainstream flooding of the Wollondilly and Mulwaree Rivers.

The main goal of this project is to understand how overland flooding/stormwater runoff occurs in Goulburn and how it could affect current and future developments. The project will also investigate measures to reduce the impact of overland flooding on life and property.

Community input is invaluable to this study. Your knowledge and experiences of flooding and drainage problems are an invaluable source of data. We would like to know if you can identify any flood marks that you or others may have recorded during previous flood events. For example, you may remember floodwaters reaching a certain height on a landmark (such as a tree or building) or specific roads that were "cut off" by floodwaters.

Council is seeking first-hand information of any flooding or drainage problems that you have experienced to help us better understand the issues that are important to you. If you think you can help, we would appreciate you completing the Goulburn Overland Flooding Risk Management Study survey available on the Council web site www.goulburn.nsw.gov.au/Council/Public-Exhibition-Notices , paper copies are available at the Goulburn Mulwaree Library or Council Customer Services Counter.
