Government To Investigate Deregistration Of CFMEU

Guy Barnett, Attorney General

The Tasmanian Government is investigating what actions can be taken against the CFMEU following this week's revelations of alleged criminal conduct, including potential deregistration of the Tasmanian division.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, said the revelations of potential criminal conduct in the CFMEU were extremely disturbing.

"The allegations of corruption and the depth of criminal infiltration in the CFMEU is a shocking indictment on the organisation, and on the Labor Party who appear to have turned a blind eye for many years," the Attorney-General said.

"It's also a betrayal of all the hard-working construction workers in Tasmania, who do not deserve to have their reputations tarnished by this rogue organisation.

"I am seeking advice on what actions can be taken at a State level to protect Tasmanians - including potential deregistration of the CFMEU in Tasmania.

"I will also be writing to the independent administrator appointed to investigate the CFMEU to request the investigation also covers the actions of the Tasmanian division."

The Attorney-General also called on Dean Winter to publicly condemn the CFMEU.

"The Opposition Leader's failure to address the tainted money that has flowed to State Labor from the CFMEU is damning on him and the entire party," the Attorney-General said.

"I call on Mr Winter to publicly condemn the CFMEU and return the dirty money his party has received over many years from the CFMEU."
