His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, and Her Excellency Mrs Hurley, have visited the City of Swan community to reflect on the recent Wooroloo bushfire, and to thank those involved in recovery efforts on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Their Excellencies met with local residents in the fire-affected area last week and toured the devastated area to better understand the destruction, noting the resilience of the local community in rebuilding and recovering from the disaster.
They also met with volunteers from East and West Gidgegannup Bushfire Brigades, and organisations helping with recovery including the Gidgegannup Country Women's Association (CWA), Red Cross, BlazeAid, and Disaster Relief Australia.
City of Swan Mayor Kevin Bailey said it was an honour to host Their Excellencies, who heard stories of heartbreaking loss, as well as countless examples of compassion, kindness, and determination to rebuild and recover.
"A highlight of the visit was Mrs Hurley leading a sing-along version of 'you are my sunshine,' which is a staple she uses to boost morale," he said.
"Their Excellencies also presented keepsakes to volunteers and residents in recognition of their strength and gallant efforts in helping to rebuild their community."
"We were also honoured to have their Excellencies attend the Mayoral Dinner, where they learned more about the needs of our growing community, and recognised the strong relationships we have with each other."
