The Australian Government has released its response to the Final Report of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (Disability Royal Commission).
The response outlines the Australian Government's commitment to working in partnership with the disability community to implement reforms to make Australia more inclusive, accessible and safe for people with disability.
The Government consulted with people with disability, families, carers, the disability sector and other stakeholders to inform its response. The Disability Royal Commission's final report contained 222 recommendations. Of these, the Australian Government has primary or shared responsibility for 172 recommendations.
The Australian Government accepts or accepts in principle 130 of these recommendations.
The Government notes 6 recommendations and is continuing to consider 36 recommendations. Many of these relate to ongoing or recently concluded inquiries or require further consultation.
The Australian, state and territory governments have also released a joint response to the Disability Royal Commission. The joint response outlines our shared commitment to working together to ensure all people with disability have access to culturally appropriate, safe and quality services and supports regardless of where they are living in Australia.
All governments will continue to work closely with people with disability to make Australia safer, more inclusive and more accessible.
This will take time and will happen in stages. The most important and urgent actions will happen first. Further design and consultation will be undertaken on how to address longer-term reform.
