GPs Urged to Boost Life-saving Cancer Screenings

Department of Health

Cancer screening saves lives, but only half of eligible Australians complete the tests.

Compared with Australians diagnosed through another way, those diagnosed through our cervical, bowel and breast screening programs are:

  • 59% less likely to die from bowel cancer
  • 69% less likely to die from breast cancer
  • 87% less likely to die from cervical cancer.

Research shows healthcare workers are key to encouraging patients to take part in cancer screening.

The packs include:

  • an A3 poster for each program
  • demonstration samples of the bowel cancer screening home test kit
  • demonstration samples of the cervical screening self-collection swab
  • information to support GPs to encourage patients to take part in cancer screening.

We ask practices to place the posters in easy to see positions within their clinics.
