Grand designs in fine fashion parade

Feminism, '70s pop icons and '80s fashion trends have helped inspire fabulous new designs which will feature at this year's HomeStart Fashion Graduate Parade at Flinders University.

From colourful streetwear to glamorous evening attire, the emphasis is on fashion as a form of self-expression – unique designs for individuals.

Twenty-four graduates of the Bachelor of Creative Arts (Fashion), a dual award offered by Flinders University and TAFE SA, are taking part in the parade, entitled 'Kaleidoscope', at Flinders University on Saturday, February 8.

The annual parade is considered a launching pad for the emerging designers who will be showing their work to not only family and friends but also key personnel in the fashion industry. Tickets are also available for the public to purchase.

Their collections range from special occasion gowns and racewear through to unisex designs and men's streetwear, with influences as diverse as Scandinavian architecture, the natural environment and pop icons including Elton John and Freddie Mercury.

Lavish textures and dramatic proportions are designed to catch the eye, while the collections are underpinned with exceptional tailoring and attention to detail.

Design by Scott Sandford (photographer Lindsay Rainey, model Jordan).

Helen Jansson, TAFE SA's Principal Lecturer, Fashion Design and Technology, says producing the five-outfit collections gives students the chance to draw on the knowledge and skills gained over three years of study.

"The collections are also an opportunity for fun and for students to explore a theme or technique they might not have considered before," she says.

"We've been taking our third-year students to China to visit the fabric markets for several years, but this is the first year where the students have really embraced the unique fabrics and trims and used them to create a point of difference in their ranges.

Design by Ashleigh Harris (photography Weronika Mamot, model Vaibhavi Lath, hair Janelle Zara, make-up Krista Jade).

"They've also used 3D printing, laser cutting, fabric printing and other techniques to create interesting elements in their garments. They've used these details well and really exceeded our expectations with these collections."

Two awards – the HomeStart Outstanding Graduate and the Lecturers' Choice – will be presented to outstanding designers on the night.

HomeStart Finance Chief Executive John Oliver says South Australia is home to some of the most talented designers in the country.

"HomeStart Finance has long been a strong advocate for helping our young students realise their full potential and progress in their chosen fields, including the design and fashion industries, which is why we are proud to be continuing partnering with TAFE SA," Mr Oliver says.

"This year, we will be providing $2000 to the winner of the HomeStart Outstanding Graduate of the Year – a prize we hope will assist them with their endeavours beyond study.

"We look forward to seeing the designs on display at the February 8 parade and encourage South Australians with a passion for fashion and seeing talented graduates in their element to attend."
