Grant is more reason to walk, wheel and ride to school

  • $225,000 allocated as part of Your Move's Connecting Schools Grant
  • Funding will benefit 43 Your Move schools to improve active travel infrastructure, skills and safety
  • Increasing active travel to school is a key priority for the State Labor Government
  • More than 232 schools currently registered in the Your Move program

More than 40 schools across the State will share in $225,000 in funding thanks to this year's round of the Connecting Schools Grants.

The Connecting Schools Grant seeks to reduce car trips, congestion and parking pressure, as well as increase student physical activity by improving bike access, skills, and infrastructure at Western Australian schools.

Some of the initiatives being delivered by the 43 successful schools in this year's grant round include new bike and scooter parking, repair stations and bike skills education workshops.

Since 2018, almost $670,000 has been invested through the grants program, with active travel rates among schools participating in the Your Move program at 42 per cent, compared to the State average of 20 per cent.

The Connecting Schools Grant continues to increase the capacity of WA schools to support their students to walk, ride or scoot for the school commute and develop healthy and sustainable travel habits, safely and confidently.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"Active travel is great for our health, great for the environment and offers more options for people to get to where they need to go.

"Starting these habits at an early age can have profound positive impacts for our kids.

"Enabling schools across the State to be able to install infrastructure and offer skill-building, safety and education sessions is crucial in helping students and their families choose to leave the car at home and enjoy a more active commute to school.

"The numbers are also indicating positive outcomes with active travel rates among schools participating in the Your Move program at 42 per cent, compared to the State average of 20 per cent.

"It's great to see a growing number of schools involved in Your Move I encourage more to get on board so that they can embark on their own active travel journey and support more kids to walk, ride or scoot to school."
