Young people will be celebrated and recognised during Victorian Youth Week 2020, with more than 100 events and activities across the state, including in bushfire affected communities.
Minister for Youth Gabrielle Williams has announced the 110 successful grant recipients for the Andrews Labor Government's Youth Week 2020, worth almost $220,000.
Fifty-nine events in rural and regional Victoria and 51 events in metropolitan Melbourne will run from 3 to 12 April. Seven of these events will be held in local government areas declared as bushfire disaster zones.
These events will give young people in bushfire affected areas the opportunity to come together, to celebrate and engage with their community.
Successful grant recipients are from community youth groups, organisations, councils and schools – from bushfire affected Cann River in East Gippsland to Glenelg Shire in Western Victoria.
The grants give young people a chance to plan, deliver and attend events – including art exhibitions, musical performances, driving lessons, cultural celebrations and sporting competitions. All events are delivered in a safe and inclusive environment that is alcohol, drug and smoke-free.
Some activities include:
- Youth Health Expo, Wycheproof College
- Dodgeball Event, Victorian Tamil Association
- Deaf Youth Formal, College for the Deaf
- Youth Behind the Wheel, Cann River Community Centre
- The COscars (Castlemaine Oscars), Mount Alexander Shire Council.
Now in its third year, interest in Victoria's Youth Week 2020 continues to grow with the number of grant applications surging 28 per cent to a total of 143 applications.
