- Cook Government funding 105 inclusive events and activities to mark International Day of People with Disability 2024

Disability Services Minister Don Punch has announced the Cook Government is supporting more than 100 events and activities across Western Australia to celebrate International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) this year.
Celebrated on December 3 every year, the United Nations-sanctioned day aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability, and celebrate their achievements and contributions.
Western Australia's theme for IDPwD in 2024 is 'Confident, Capable and Creative: Come with Me', which highlights the strength, resilience and capability of people with disability, and recognises the value of driving change together as an inclusive community.
More than $100,000 in funding has been awarded to 101 organisations for 105 inclusive events and activities during the week of 3 December. Each recipient was allocated up to $1000 support through the IDPwD grants program, which is supported by the Department of Communities.
Highlights of this year's grants program across the metropolitan area include an 'All Abilities Active' event at Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre, a free movie screening and panel discussion at Luna Leederville, and a storytellers festival in Joondalup.
In the regions, there will be an all-abilities activity day delivered by the Shire of Katanning, a three-day 'Empower Ability' event hosted by the Shire of Dardanup, and a 'Wheatbelt's Got Talent' competition in Northam, to name a few.
The Cook Government is committed to building a more inclusive WA, where people with disability are engaged and able to live as they choose in a community where everyone has equitable opportunities and outcomes in all areas of life.
The WA State Disability Strategy 2020-2030 sets the foundation for building a more inclusive WA, empowering people with disability to participate meaningfully in all parts of society and to have the resources to do so.

"It's estimated that 515,600 people, or 19 per cent of Western Australians, have a disability.
"The Cook Government is committed to building a more inclusive WA, where people with disability are engaged and able to live as they choose in a community where everyone belongs.
"International Day of People with Disability is a day of inclusion, celebration and recognition, with an added element of fun which I am sure will be readily available at these wonderful events and activities around our State."
