Funding up to $3,000 is available for preschools, childcare centres, primary and high schools in the North Sydney local government area (LGA) through Council's Green Schools Grants program. But be quick – applications are closing Sunday 30 March.
The grants will support school communities to implement environmental initiatives.
Projects can focus on plastic waste, energy, water, climate change, biodiversity or other activities related to the environment and sustainability.
Mayor Zoë Baker says: "Council is proud to support local schools to run on-the-ground environmental projects. These initiatives can help protect our environment by reducing waste and carbon emissions, and contribute to healthy local wildlife habitats that thrive for future generations. What's more, they can support students to become environmental leaders in our community.
"If you have a project that can make a difference, I encourage you to apply."
Past grant recipients include:
- St Mary's Primary School developed a Catching Water unit to help fix problem pollution in the catchment. The Year 2 class also conducted a litter count in Ridge Street and St Leonards Park and presented a report to Council, making recommendations to manage the litter problem.
- Little Sprouts Early Education transformed their yard into a natural oasis. Students, teachers and families worked together to create herb and vegetable beds, installed a Bokashi Bin for food waste, developed a native garden, installed a water tank and revived their earlier worm farm.
