Two Girls & their Goats have been helping clean up flood-impacted areas at the Yea Wetlands.
Weeds are a big threat to biodiversity, both on land and in water. They compete with native plants for space, nutrients and sunlight. Weeds seeds are easily spread over large areas of lands by floodwaters making invasive species difficult to manage.
But here's where the goats come in! There are several reasons why strategic goat grazing can beat more traditional weed control methods, especially when working in environmentally delicate and significant areas including:
no need for chemicals
they can selectively graze where machinery cannot
they clear areas where snakes live, making it safer for humans
they get lunch and we get a show
So if you're passing by and see this bleat-aful crew, make sure you give them a wave.
