The Property Council of Australia welcomes the Victorian Government's publication today of the 10-year plan for commencing new precinct structure plans in the city's western, northern and southeastern growth corridors.
But Property Council Victorian Executive Director Cath Evans said the plan didn't provide the property industry enough detail about how plans will be completed or ways to address the current barriers to quicker delivery.
"Precinct structure plans underpin the development of new homes and workplaces, but in recent years these plans have been slowed down and made more complex," Ms Evans said.
"With a housing crisis to address, it's crucial that we deliver these precinct plans more efficiently.
"Today's 10-year greenfields plan fails to answer key questions about the speed of delivery or how to address the current barriers such as key infrastructure delays, or the current cultural heritage and environment assessment processes.
"There's also little information about how sites have been selected and prioritised.
"Greenfield developers have a proven track record of delivering new and cohesive communities with affordable housing in places people want to live. Continuing and accelerating these developments will be critical to meeting our state's housing targets.
"With significant challenges to the delivery of new housing, it's vital there is capacity to increase
the proposed target of 18,000 new homes a year.
"It's always good to have the certainty that a long-term strategy brings, but the Property Council will seek more information over coming weeks to provide the industry assurance on delivery and timeframes," Ms Evans said.
