Greens Leader Adam Bandt says the government's Electric Vehicle strategy is still stuck in the slow lane and needs to accelerate.
Mr Bandt said Australia now has a strategy without a destination and the government needs to set a target date for the phase out of petrol and diesel cars and get moving with strong fuel efficiency standards.
The Albanese government released its National Electric Vehicle Strategy today but failed to include a target for EV take up or a phase out date for petrol and diesel vehicles. A decision on fuel efficiency standards has been pushed out until the end of the year.
As stated by Leader of the Australian Greens, Adam Bandt MP:
"We now have a roadmap but with no clear destination. The government needs to set electric vehicle targets and get moving on implementing strong fuel efficiency standards."
"Until we have targets and strong fuel efficiency standards we will continue to be a dumping ground for dirty, inefficient cars."
"The Greens want a commitment to phase out new sales of petrol and diesel cars over this decade and fuel efficiency standards at least as strong as in Europe."
"It's clear what needs to be done, but the government is keeping us in the slow lane when we should be accelerating into the future."
"The Greens are likely to be in the balance of power on the implementation of the strategy. Labor can choose to work with the Liberals and the oil barons or work with us. We are ready to work with the government on what needs to be done, so let's get on with it."
