The Australian Greens will push for a $4.85 million investment in Footscray Community Arts for the seat of Fraser.
The Greens say this funding will progress Footscray Community Arts' aspiration in delivering a landmark gallery and expanded cultural hub for Melbourne's west. The investment would enable a comprehensive business case, continued community consultation, and design plans for its precinct transformation.
Footscray Community Arts has championed local artists and communities in Melbourne's western suburbs for over fifty years. It supports over 500 artists annually and hosts more than 100,000 visitors, making it a cornerstone of the region's creative and social life.
With Melbourne's west rapidly growing, the Greens say this funding will unlock much-needed capacity and ensure Footscray Community Arts can evolve alongside the community's changing needs.
As stated by Australian Greens candidate for Fraser, Huong Truong:
"The arts have the power to unite us, shift our perspectives, and tell the stories that shape us. The creative industries are the lifeblood of so many communities, and here in Fraser, it is no different.
"Footscray Community Arts has spent decades empowering local, diverse artists through their programs, employment and creative spaces. This is a critical opportunity for arts and culture in the West, with the vacancy of the former 'Big Fish' site and the Centre's partnership with Maribyrnong Council.
"I am proud to announce the Greens' support for organisations like Footscray Community Arts. This timely $4.85 million investment will help transform its precinct and expand its cultural and social impact.
"Politicians have neglected Melbourne's western suburbs for too long. With more Greens in Parliament, our communities will finally be represented on the infrastructure and services we desperately need."
As stated by Australian Greens Senator for Victoria, Steph Hodgins-May:
"Huong is a powerful voice for the local community in Fraser and, if elected, would fight for the protection of our creative spaces, including Footscray Community Arts.
"The people of Fraser have been overlooked by the major parties for too long. By voting Greens, this community can get the representation it deserves.
"With Greens in the balance of power, we'll fight to keep Dutton out and push Labor to put our communities first."
As stated by CEO of Footscray Community Arts, Daniel Santangeli:
"This commitment from the Greens brings vital visibility to a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Melbourne's western suburbs.
"For over 50 years, Footscray Community Arts has been at the heart of the West's cultural life, but urgent infrastructure revitalisation is needed to meet rising demand driven by rapid population growth.
"The first major public gallery in Melbourne's west would future-proof our precinct and support affordable tenancies for creative organisations and artists.
"It will keep the local area creative - while growing jobs, boosting visitation and enhancing liveability."
