Griffith City Council will mark NAIDOC Week with a flag raising ceremony followed by dancing and cultural activities at the Griffith City Library later in the week.
Residents are invited to help officially mark the start of NAIDOC Week in Griffith by attending a flag raising ceremony on Monday 8 July, 10am outside Council's Administration Building. The Marrambidya Dance Group will be performing and morning tea will be served.
NAIDOC Week, running from 7-14 July 2024, celebrates and recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This year's theme, chosen by the National NAIDOC Committee, is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud.
The theme honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran said Council recognises the importance of Aboriginal people in the history and growth of Griffith and its surrounding villages.
"We also acknowledge the Wiradjuri people as traditional owners of the land and waters and pay respect to Wiradjuri elders past, present and future," said Cr Curran
"NAIDOC Week is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to come together in a positive way to recognise the enormous contribution that Indigenous Australians make to the community."
On Wednesday 10 July 2024 at 10.30am, the Marrambidya Dance Group will be at the Griffith City Library presenting traditional dances and cultural workshops. Enjoy traditional face painting, hair spray, art and much more.
