Groundbreaking Withdrawal Service To Open In Kimberley

  • First-of-its-kind low medical withdrawal service to open in Kununurra
  • Service will provide a local, safe space to withdraw from alcohol and other drugs
  • The service aims to keep people connected and close to home

The Cook Labor Government is pleased to officially open the first-of-its kind Aboriginal community-controlled withdrawal service in Kununurra, Western Australia.

Delivered by Wunan, the Kimberley Withdrawal and Intervention Centre will provide a low medical withdrawal service in the Kimberley region, offering the local community a safe place to withdraw from alcohol and other drugs and stabilise before receiving further treatment.

This modelaims to keep people with mental health and alcohol and other drug issues connected and close to home.

The Cook Government has provided $7.8 million for the service.

As stated by Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

"The opening of this service maps a new direction for intervening in alcohol and drug issues in rural and regional areas of Western Australia.

"As an Aboriginal community-controlled withdrawal service, Kimberley Withdrawal and Intervention Centre will provide a safe space for people withdrawing from alcohol or other drugs."

As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna:

"At a time when people can feel quite isolated, it is important to maintain community connections and support.

"I'm proud the Cook Government has delivered this important service for the Kimberley community."
