The Gumeracha community is ready to show off their upgraded main street after a community-led project to help revitalise the town.
Formed in 2016, the Gumeracha Main Street Project came together with the aim to achieve economic sustainability for local businesses, in part through improved aesthetics and tourism-appeal of the town centre. This committed group of volunteers has worked closely with Council on a variety of opportunities, even winning the Public Engagement and Community Planning award from the SA Planning Institute in 2018.
The extensive upgrade project has included moving powerlines underground, improvements to stormwater infrastructure, and refreshing the streetscape with new paving, trees (Flowering Cherry, Prunus serrulata), bike hoops and community benches.
In addition to this, the Gumeracha Main Street Project has been maintaining new flowerbeds along the length of the verge, and a new mural welcomes visitors to town with the story of Gumeracha's First Nations People.
