Gunner Surprised by Artillery Award

Department of Defence

This year's recipient of the Royal Australian Artillery's Mattner Award had no idea he had been nominated.

"I was on exercise on Saint Barbara's Day when it came out last year so I wasn't even aware, but it feels good to be recognised for the work I have put in throughout the year," Lance Bombadier Joshua Burke said.

Lance Bombadier Burke grew up on the Sunshine Coast.

As a member of 111 Battery, 16 Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery, Lance Bombadier Burke is excited about training and mentoring soldiers for the introduction into service of the newly acquired national advanced surface-to-air missile system (NASAMS).

"In terms of the capability of the kit, it's light years in front of what we used to have and that gives us a lot more confidence as an operator to know that what you're doing is being much more effective. I think it is something to be proud of," Lance Bombadier Burke said.

Head of Regiment Brigadier Damian Hill said Lance Bombadier Burke had made excellent achievements in pursuing technical mastery on the NASAMS.

"Lance Bombadier Burke has actively sought opportunities to lead by example and mentor peers while instructing throughout introduction into service courses," Brigadier Hill said.

"His deliberate and methodical decision-making gives confidence and respect to his advice and opinions."

Lance Bombadier Burke has also been required to perform higher duties.

"He approached these duties with professionalism, vigour and an excellent attitude, performing all tasks to a very high standard," Brigadier Hill said.

Lance Bombadier Burke was presented with an engraved watch and certificate and will have the opportunity to travel to the United Kingdom to tour Royal Artillery units.

Lieutenant Edward William Mattner was one of only six soldiers in the AIF to be awarded the Military Cross, Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Military Medal. Lieutenant Mattner was born in Oakbank, South Australia, not far from 16 Regiment's Woodside Barracks.
