Halls Creek Incidents

Eight people have been charged, and several more remain in custody, as part of an ongoing investigation into a series of incidents in Halls Creek on Monday and Tuesday, 6 & 7 January 2025. The incidents, including serious assaults and arson, are being treated as linked incidents and are alleged to involve persons known to each other. In one incident, on Tuesday 7 January 2025, a 27-year-old man was assaulted by a group of offenders. During the assault it will be alleged the victim was struck with a number of weapons, including an axe. The victim was taken to Halls Creek Hospital with serious injuries, and was later transferred to Darwin Hospital by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Six people have been arrested and charged in relation to this incident. In other incidents on Tuesday 7 January 2025, a vehicle parked at a house in Halls Creek was set on fire, and in a separate incident two vehicles were driven at a group of people in what is being investigated as a deliberate act. Police are investigating whether any of the group were struck by either of the vehicles. The investigations into those incidents are ongoing. Superintendent John Hutchison from the Kimberley District Office said other linked incidents are also being investigated. "This is a complex matter, and police are working with community elders and the families of the people believed to be involved to prevent further incidents taking place. "While the incidents to date involve people who are believed to be known to each other, several of the incidents have taken place in the general public space and this has posed an unacceptable risk to other community members. "Additional police from Broome and Kununurra were immediately deployed to Halls Creek, and remain there to maintain public safety and to investigate the incidents that have occurred."
