Griffith City Council officially opened two important projects on Monday, with the Hanwood Cycleway and the upgraded Henderson Oval Playspace both unveiled.
At 2pm on Monday, 31 May 2021 Transport for NSW (TfNSW) representative, Denise Crouch, Acting Senior Manager, Community Partnering – Riverina/Murray and Chris Quinn, Griffith Operations Manager, Baiada joined Griffith Mayor, Councillor John Dal Broi to open the Hanwood Cycleway.
Councillor John Dal Broi said the Hanwood Cycleway project is the result of good strategic planning for the future.
"As a City we need connective infrastructure such as the Hanwood Cycleway for transport options to get to and from work as well as the opportunity to enjoy a healthier lifestyle by walking or biking," he said.
"It is wonderful to see so many people using this cycleway."
The total project was over $1.4 million with funding from TfNSW under the NSW Government's Active Transport Priority Cycleways Program over $1 million and Griffith City Council contributing $350,000.
The 4.5 km cycleway runs from Stafford Road to Murphy Road south of the Hanwood Village with 2.5m wide asphalt surface. Additional streetlights and pedestrian refuges have also been installed to accommodate the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. Work commenced on the Hanwood Cycleway project in April 2019.
The custom designed arch bridge, located beside the Kidman Way on Main Drain J is a Concrete Filled Steel Tube (CFST) construction and is believed to be the only one of its kind in Australia.
Meanwhile, the Henderson Oval Playspace upgrade was officially opened at 4pm by Councillor Dal Broi. This is a $125,000 Griffith City Council project and includes $50,000 funded by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment under the Everyone Can Play program.
The Playspace is designed to provide an inclusive playground. Everyone Can Play aims to provide people of all ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds with an opportunity to play.
The upgrade includes the play equipment under a large shade shelter, new seating and extended shared pathway from Gorton Street to the playground. Henderson Park is the precinct playground for Yoogali. Trees removed from Jubilee Oval in Griffith have been repurposed to provide a nature play area at Henderson Oval, with local school students leaving a lasting impression on the logs by adding their handprints. The Oval is named after Yoogali residents Roy and Millicent Henderson, whose descendants were in attendance at the opening, helping unveil the plaque.
