The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) to name a railway station in the suburb of Sydney as Saunders Railway Station.
Acting Chair of the Geographical Names Board Thomas Grinter said the Board was now seeking feedback to gauge community sentiment for the proposed name.
"We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed name to ensure it resonates with the community," Mr Grinter said.
"The Geographical Names Board will consider all submissions received."
The proposal seeks to commemorate Reginald Walter Saunders (1920 - 1990). Captain Reginald Walter 'Reg' Saunders was the first Aboriginal person to receive a commission in the Australian Army. Saunders served with great distinction and was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1971.
The railway station is located underground, running parallel to Pitt Street with entries from Park Street and Bathurst Street.
The proposed name Gadigal Railway Station was advertised for this stop in October 2021.
TfNSW requested to defer the Gadigal Railway Station submission while the alternative name of Saunders Railway Station was explored.
Suggestions for alternative names are not being sought at this time.
Details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board's website.
Written submissions can also be mailed to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.
The closing date for submissions is 11 May 2022.
