The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning a 6500-hectare hazard reduction burn in the Morrisons Flat area of the Goulburn River National Park from tomorrow (27 March), weather permitting.
The large, planned burn will start tomorrow and run into the weekend with crew patrolling the fireground for a number of days until forecast rain early next week.
A large section of Goulburn River National Park will be closed for the duration of the burn, including the Morrisons Flat and Drummers Flat trails and adjacent areas. Remote area bushwalkers and other visitors must check NPWS Alerts for up-to-date information on track, trail and park closures, noting areas will be reopened when deemed safe by fire crews.
The aim of the burn is to reduce naturally accumulated fuel loads in the park, helping to provide strategic protection for rural properties between Wollar and Kerrabee as well as Merriwa. The burn also aims to better protect transport infrastructure including the Sandy Hollow rail line and Bylong Valley Way in case of future wildfire.
This burn is one of many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS each year, many with assistance from the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW.
