The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), assisted by the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) and Fire and Rescue NSW, will be conducting a hazard reduction burn in Wyrrabalong National Park from Thursday 14 September.
The 16-hectare burn will help to protect the local community including the neighbouring Vietnam Veterans Hostel and the Heritage Retirement Village.
The burn is expected to begin around 10 am on Thursday, with mop up and patrols continuing over the following days until the burn is declared out.
Tracks and trails in the park will be closed for the duration of the burn operation, including Wetland Fire Trail, Redgum car park and fire trail, Lillypilly Fire Trail and walking track and the Magenta Share Pathway adjacent to Wilfred Barrett Drive.
These trails will reopen once the area is assessed as safe.
Traffic control will be operating on Wilfred Barrett Drive to support the hazard reduction burn and normal traffic conditions will be affected. Motorists are advised to follow the directions of signage and drive to conditions.
Smoke may be visible to residents in Norah Head, Noraville, Toukley and Magenta. People vulnerable to smoke are encouraged to stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed to reduce exposure.
Hazard reduction burns are essential to reduce bushfire fuel loads to help protect parks, neighbours and communities from future bushfires.
This burn is one of many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS each year, many with assistance from the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW.
All burns around the state are coordinated with the NSW Rural Fire Service to ensure the impact on the community is assessed at a regional level.
