QUT has been named Australia's top university for an academic subject that is advancing global healthcare and disease diagnosis.
Biomedical Engineering at QUT secured the top spot nationally in the 2024 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by ShanghaiRanking. It also ranked 16th in the world.
Nursing placed 24th in the world as a subject and sixth in Australia.
QUT acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Robina Xavier said the results reinforced the role of QUT as the university of choice for students keen to change the future of healthcare.
"The teaching and research we do at QUT has an impact on the quality of life of people all over the world," Professor Xavier said.
"We are helping children with spinal deformities; we are partnering with industry leaders such as Sealy Australia to create new design criteria for commercial mattresses to improve our health while we sleep.
"We are interrogating the role of microorganisms from diverse environments to improve health outcomes for the gut but also to improve the health of environmental wonders like the Great Barrier Reef.
"And we are training the next generation of nurses to fill urgent skills shortages in Australia and abroad."
In 2021, QUT opened the Centre for Biomedical Technologies that is currently working with around 180 Higher Degree Researchers across the faculties of engineering, health and science to discover, develop and deliver the next frontier of biomedical technologies.
These technologies are improving the treatment of complex medical cases stemming from injuries, infection and age-related issues.
Next year QUT will participate in the world's first total artificial heart design competition the Heart Hackathon, which was held in Japan this week.
Centre for Biomedical Technologies Deputy Director Associate Professor Paige Little said the ranking recognised QUT as a global leader in academic excellence and research impact in Biomedical Engineering.
"This ranking is evidence of the excellent calibre of our academic faculty and the status quo research facilities we support," Associate Professor Little said.
The 2024 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by ShanghaiRanking is released annually to highlight the top universities across 55 different subject areas, with a methodology that includes international collaboration, research impact, high quality research, world-class output, and world-class faculty.
Beside placing in the top 50 globally for Biomedical Engineering and Nursing, QUT placed in the top 100 for eight subjects, including Communication, Transportation Science and Technology, Business Administration, Education, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, and Energy Science and Engineering.
