Thousands of Tasmanians will be provided with cost-of-living assistance this year thanks to the Tasmanian Government and NILS.
Minister for Community Services, Roger Jaensch, said the No Interest Loan Scheme is a proven and practical solution for helping people tackle cost-of-living pressures.
"Last year NILS lent $9 million to almost 5,000 Tasmanians, with that spending flowing through to 960 different Tasmanian businesses," Minister Jaensch said.
"The loans are no interest, have no fees and no charges, which means people who are in difficulty can get tailored and affordable assistance.
"The No Interest Loan Scheme provides loans of up to $2,000 to eligible people, which could mean money for car registration and repairs, fridges, freezers, computers, tablets and home furniture.
"The loans are also available for medical and dental services.
"The Tasmanian Government has entered into a new, three-year partnership investment plan to help NILS provide up to 2,000 more loans each year, over a three-year period at a cost of $2.1 million.
"In addition to that, we have extended the highly successful Energy Saver Subsidy, which provides a direct 50 per cent subsidy on the cost of an energy efficient appliance, like a fridge, freezer or washing machine, for low-income Tasmanians if coupled with a NILS no-interest loan for the balance.
"Funding of $500,000 a year will be delivered each year for four years.
"High interest rates, as well as rising food and petrol costs, are proving challenging for many Tasmanians, so access to no-interest loans can be an enormous relief.
"Delivery partners such as Neighbourhood Houses play an integral role in helping people access loans and can provide advice and assistance with applications.
"By working together, alongside our vital community service sector, the Tasmanian Government can ensure Tasmanians in need have access to the supports they require.
"This Government will continue to invest in the financial independence of Tasmanians in need through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future."
