Applications for the Cardinia Shire Heritage Grants are now open to residents until Friday 7 June.
The program provides funds to restore and conserve places of heritage value that are covered by a heritage overlay in the Cardinia Shire Planning Scheme.
Funds are available for private sites, as well as places that are open and accessible to the public, including commercial premises and other significant sites.
For publicly accessible places, applicants can apply for up to 50 per cent of the project cost, up to the value of $5,000. For private places, applicants can apply for 25% of project cost up to a maximum of $2,500.
Gardens, trees and hedges identified as having heritage significance, and that are covered by a heritage overlay, are also eligible to apply.
Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Jack Kowarzik said Council wants to support projects that leave a legacy.
"We are fortunate to have many historically significant sites in Cardinia Shire. So, we want to preserve and showcase them as best we can. Sites such as town-halls, churches, shops and even significant trees and hedges, and more."
"Projects that can be funded include preservations, restorations, reconstructions, or horticultural works. Such works enrich our communities and provide important connections to our local history," Cr Kowarzik said.
A recipient last year, St Johns Church of England in Nar Nar Gon, provides an inspiring example of what can be achieved. The church's front fences and gates had been decaying badly. With the assistance from the grant, the construction of a new fence and gates in suitable heritage style was made possible.
The project helped to maintain the church's heritage value to the community, as well as support the site's delivery of community-based events, such as for music group and men's group meetings.
