Heritage Recognition For Floreat's Iwanoff House

  • Former family home and architectural studio of Bulgarian-born architect Iwan Iwanoff added to State Register of Heritage Places
  • Example of innovative late 20th century international and brutalist architectural styles
  • Iwanoff House remains an enduring symbol of migrant creativity and resilience

Heritage Minister David Templeman today announced the inclusion of Iwanoff House in Floreat in the State Register of Heritage Places.

The widely regarded Iwanoff House served as both the family home and creative studio of Iwan Iwanoff, whose bold and distinctive architectural style has left an indelible mark on Western Australia's built environment.

Built in 1967, the house is an early example of Iwanoff's unconventional design approach, heavily influenced by European trends. Constructed with concrete besser blocks, expansive glass panels and inbuilt furniture, the house has undergone some modifications over the years while retaining Iwanoff's unique architectural features and geometric design.

The registration of Iwanoff House reflects the Heritage Council of WA's commitment to celebrate under-represented stories, including those of non-British migrants who helped shape WA's cultural identity in the post-war era.

The State Register of Heritage Places is a statutory list of places with cultural heritage significance, representing the story of WA's history and development.

As stated by Heritage Minister David Templeman:

"Iwanoff House is a significant addition to our State heritage register, reflecting a unique chapter in architectural heritage for Western Australia and one of the few distinctive homes designed by Iwan Iwanoff.

"This house demonstrates Iwanoff's visionary design principles, highlights the creative contributions of an innovative architect and tells the broader story of how post-war migrants helped shape the cultural and social fabric of our State.

"By including Iwanoff House on the State Register, we are ensuring the protection of this house and preserving its story for future generations to appreciate and draw inspiration from."

Comments attributed to Churchlands MLA Christine Tonkin:

"I am delighted to hear that this iconic home has been placed on the State Heritage Register.

"It is much loved locally and appreciated by many. It is great to hear that it will be protected for future generations."
