A quick-thinking police officer has heroically rescued three people who fell off a jet ski and were left stranded in the middle of Pykes Creek Reservoir on Sunday 11 December.
Ballan Acting Sergeant Sally Fairweather was on duty driving on the Western Freeway at 6pm when she noticed a jet ski circling in the water without passengers.
Upon arrival at the shoreline, Acting Sergeant Fairweather sighted two adults and a child huddled together in distress, and unable to reach their jet ski. All individuals were wearing safety floatation devices; however, they were unable to swim and were left stranded in the water with no one close by to assist.
Given the conditions, which included heavy intermittent rain and significant wind chill factor, Acting Sergeant Fairweather had concerns for their welfare. This included a potential risk of hypothermia, given the frigid water temperature and the fact there was no one in the surrounding area to assist.
All three individuals, including two middle aged males, and a young boy were assessed by Ambulance Victoria at the scene and despite being extremely cold, were cleared of any significant physical injuries.
