The University of Hong Kong (HKU) held a ceremony today (25 March) to celebrate the opening of the renovated East Gate at Bonham Road. President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Xiang Zhang, members of the HKU Council, and members of the University attended the ceremony.

The renovated East Gate features two new covered escalators connecting the three existing lifts between the K K Leung Building and the Knowles Building on the Main Campus. The enhancement will facilitate pedestrian access from Sai Ying Pun to HKU, providing escalators, staircases, and lifts leading to the eastern part of the Main Campus.

As a landmark gateway, the design of the renovated East Gate harmonises with the architectural styles on campus and complements the architectural features of two nearby declared monuments—the Fung Ping Shan Library and the Main Building. The design of the renovated East Gate also incorporated ideas reflected by staff, students, and alumni.

The portal design of the renovated East Gate seamlessly blends modern architectural elements with traditional style. Additionally, 3D scanning technology was utilised to preserve the calligraphy of renowned scholar, Professor Jao Tsung-I, and reconstruct the University's name plaque, thereby upholding HKU's history.

Designers have also chosen to plant bougainvillea around the renovated East Gate to welcome staff, students, and members of the public with vibrant greenery.

During the ceremony, Professor Zhang said that the East Gate renovation project underscores HKU's commitment to continually enhancing campus facilities for our staff, students, and visitors — ensuring a welcoming and inspiring environment.

The renovated East Gate will be open to members of the University and the public from 6 pm today. The three existing lifts and staircases will also resume operation. HKU remains committed to enhancing campus facilities, with plans underway to add a ramp near Bonham Road to facilitate access. Individuals with specific needs may use the lifts at MTR HKU Station exits A1/A2 as an accessible route to the Main Campus.
