The Centre on Contemporary China and the World (CCCW) at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Shanghai Sci-Tech Inno Center for Infection & Immunity signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the Pujiang Innovation Forum 2024 on April 27, 2024.
Professor LI Cheng, Founding Director of the CCCW and Professor ZHANG Wenhong, Director of the Shanghai Sci-Tech Inno Center for Infection & Immunity represented the two parties in the signing. The ceremony was witnessed by Mr GONG Zheng, Mayor of Shanghai; Mr Paul CHAN, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government; Professor SUN Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology & Industry of the HKSAR Government; Mr WANG Weiming, Director-General of the Department of Educational, Scientific & Technological Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; and Professor Xiang ZHANG, President and Vice Chancellor of HKU.
The project outlined in the MoU brings together top experts in the fields of climate change, marine conservation, infectious disease control, public health, and public policy to pursue original research, establish regular monitoring systems, and provide public policy discourse platforms. Through academic seminars, policy analysis, and public discussion, it aspires to generate interdisciplinary, multidimensional, and high-quality research outcomes and public health impact.
In accordance with these collaborative efforts, the two sides jointly held a roundtable titled "Climate-Ocean-Health Study Interdisciplinary Observer Network (COHESION)" at HKU on April 26. Over a dozen experts in related fields, including Professor GONG Peng, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Development) of HKU; Professor JIN Dong-yan, Senior Associate Dean of HKU Graduate School; Professor Alexis K H LAU, Head and Chair Professor of the Division of Environment and Sustainability at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; Professor CHAI Fei, Tang Shifeng Chair Professor in Marine Sciences at Xiamen University (XMU); and Professor XUE Huijie, Nanqiang Distinguished Professor of XMU joined a brainstorming session for the direction of the project on the two specific topics of "Climate Change and Pandemics" and "Environment, Ocean and Public Health."
