HKU Welcomes All-Round Elites, Fosters Global Talent

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is committed to promoting whole-person education. Through its various admission schemes this year, the University has admitted students with outstanding academic performance and diverse backgrounds. Professor Bennett Yim, Director of Undergraduate Admissions and International Student Exchange, together with several students admitted to HKU through the various schemes attended a media briefing today (7 August).

Professor Bennett Yim is pleased to see the satisfactory admission results for this year's intake. "HKU has always been supportive of students' diverse development, valuing their academic performance while encouraging them to excel in non-academic areas and achieve success. Adopting a holistic approach when evaluating students, the University proactively identifies and admits talented students through various admission schemes, providing them with different opportunities to unleash their potential. This year, HKU has admitted students who have not only achieved good results in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education ("HKDSE") Examination, but also have a wide range of non-academic achievements. HKU recognises that nurturing all-round talents is the future trend of society and will support students for whole-person development so that they can continue to pursue their dreams at HKU," said Professor Bennett Yim.

Commitment to Recruit Top Talents with Outstanding Results in HKDSE through JUPAS

HKU attracted numerous top students through the Joint University Programmes Admissions System ("JUPAS") and admitted 4 "top scorers" (5** in 6 subjects). Together with other top scorers with 5** in 4 or more subjects, they will study a wide range of programmes, including Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Business Administration in International Business and Global Management, Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Finance / Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting Data Analytics, Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies, Science Master Class, etc. HKU is pleased to see a wider range of interests and programme choices among students.

This year, HKU admitted 15 President's Scholars who achieved an average score of 49 in the best six subjects.

The admission results for various programmes were remarkable. The overall scores are higher than those of last year, with the average score of students admitted being close to 6 per subject.

Forward-looking Special Admissions Schemes

HKU actively recruits students with special talents and interests in specific disciplines or areas. This year, the University admitted 117 academically outstanding and multi-talented students through the School Nominations Direct Admission Scheme (SNDAS). They are admitted to different programmes according to their interests and strengths.

In addition to admitting 8 top athletes through the Top Athletes Direct Admission Scheme (TADAS) this year, HKU also admitted 15 outstanding athletes through the long-standing Sports Scholarship Scheme. These athletes excel in sports such as fencing, track and field, squash, tennis, table tennis, water polo, lacrosse, etc. They will enrol in programmes such as Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies, Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Global Health and Development, Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Finance / Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting Data Analytics, Bachelor of Psychology, and others. HKU will continue to provide resources and support for these elite athletes, assisting them to achieve excellence in both sports and academics.

This year, HKU admitted 48 local non-Chinese-speaking students, the highest number among the eight funded universities. The admission results were very satisfactory, with these students enrolling in programmes such as Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and Digital Technologies, Bachelor of Arts and Sciences, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Engineering, Global Engineering and Business Programme, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics, Bachelor of Social Sciences, etc.

The SNDAS programme launched by the Education Bureau is entering its third year, and HKU has been actively supporting the initiative as it allows a more comprehensive assessment of student performance, rather than solely relying on HKDSE results. "We are pleased to see that students admitted through this scheme have clear aspirations and achievements in non-academic areas such as sports, arts, and community services. Their performance in the HKDSE is also impressive, with an average score comparable to our overall admissions standard, reflecting the scheme's success," added Professor Yim.
