HMCS Montréal Embarks on Indo-Pacific Operation HORIZON

National Defence

Today, His Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Montréal's crew bid farewell to their loved ones at a departure ceremony held at HMCS Scotian in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The departure of HMCS Montréal represents the first of three Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) warships that are annually deploying under Operation HORIZON in support of the Government of Canada's Indo-Pacific Strategy. This deployment demonstrates an enduring commitment to the Indo-Pacific region and enhances Canada's role as an international security partner.

Throughout the operation, HMCS Montréal will reinforce ties with international allies and strengthen relationships with like-minded nations by integrating with partner navies, participating in training exercises, and engaging in military and diplomatic cooperation. Operation HORIZON includes expanded opportunities to work side-by-side with allies and partners, empowering the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) to play a more active role contributing to regional security.

Increased engagement in the Indo-Pacific region demonstrates Canada's continuing defence commitment to be a persistent presence in support of peace and security. The work that RCN ships and personnel undertake overseas reinforces diplomatic efforts, promotes Canadian values and interests, and supports Canada's role as a trusted international security partner both regionally and on the world stage.
