12 St John's Avenue, New Town

The Hobart City Council Planning Committee has approved a development application for hospital services, carparking, tree removal and associated works for 12 St John's Avenue, New Town.

The proposal includes a purpose-built mental health facility for the Southern Mental Health Beds Development (SMHBD) and the Tasmanian Eating Disorders Service (TEDS), with a three-storey building, a basement for discreet emergency patient delivery, and a shared entrance with welcome and treatment rooms for outpatients.

The first floor will contain 15 inpatient SMHBD rooms with ensuites, consulting and treatment spaces, and eight TEDS rooms with ensuites, full time house and treatments spaces and staff offices. The second floor will accommodate 90 staff on site, along with medication, treatment, and meeting spaces.

It also includes a 31-bay car park, while the design of the building attempts to reflect the character of the St John's Park heritage buildings with hipped roofs, a mix of external materials and earth tones.

Several representations were made regarding heritage issues, specifically around burials on the proposed site. Burial issues are governed by the Burial and Cremation Act and the Aboriginal Heritage Act, not the Land Use Planning and Approvals Act. Any required approvals under these acts are separate but equally important.

1 Marieville Esplanade, 7 Marieville Esplanade, Sandy Bay, and adjacent area of River Derwent

The Hobart City Council Planning Committee has approved a development application for a floating pontoon on 1 Marieville Esplanade, 7 Marieville Esplanade, Sandy Bay, and adjacent area of the River Derwent, Hobart.

The proposal includes construction of a new 12m long, 3.5m wide floating pontoon which extends from Marieville Esplanade for use by the Sandy Bay Rowing Club.

51 Smith Street, North Hobart

The Hobart City Council Planning Committee has approved a development application for change of use to visitor accommodation at 51 Smith Street, North Hobart.

The dwelling is a two bedroom, double-storey conjoined terrace with no on-street parking provided.

365 Macquarie Street, South Hobart

The Hobart City Council Planning Committee has approved a development application for partial demolition and alterations to car parking at 365 Macquarie Street, South Hobart.

The proposal includes retrospective approval for the demolition of outbuildings, creating five onsite car parking spaces, and sealing of existing car parking area.

Each fortnight the City's Planning Officers are busy reviewing a range of residential and commercial development applications for Hobart.

This fortnight, 14 development applications delegated to council officers were also approved while 19 development applications are currently being advertised.
