Hobsons Bay Launches National Reconciliation Week Program

reconciliation week 2024

Council is hosting a series of National Reconciliation Week events and activities, enabling people to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and to make valuable community connections.

During National Reconciliation Week, which runs from May 27 to June 3, Mayor Matt Tyler will meet with interfaith leaders to discuss how the whole community can work together towards reconciliation.

The week's program in Hobsons Bay also includes a Perrin/Deep Winter Walk on Country at Altona Coastal Park, a Story Time at Newport Community Hub and movie screenings at Altona and Newport libraries. The full details of the week's events are on our National Reconciliation Week page.

National Reconciliation Week commemorates two significant milestones. May 27 is the date of the successful 1967 referendum, which included changing the constitution to count Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people in the census. June 3 is the anniversary of the High Court's historic Mabo decision.

Quotes attributable to Mayor of Hobsons Bay, Cr Matt Tyler:

"I think the theme of this year's National Reconciliation Week, 'Now More Than Ever,' is so significant. It's a powerful reminder to all of us that our commitment to reconciliation must continue.

"We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation. Together we can build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.

"As part of my mayoral program, I've committed to working with our community on this important issue and I'm looking forward to meeting with our interfaith leaders to talk about how we can work together on reconciliation."
