Hobsons Bay's unique environment continues to play an important role in the global ecosystem, with World Wetlands Day celebrated on 2 February.
World Wetlands Day is recognised as a United Nations International Day of Importance, celebrated around the world annually, with this year's theme centring on "Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future".
Hobsons Bay plays a vital role as a stopover for migratory shorebirds traveling from as far as Siberia and Alaska.
The coastal havens are essential spaces for birds to rest and refuel before long journeys back to the northern hemisphere in April and May.
Hobsons Bay, in partnership with the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre, is pivotal in caring for and supporting the environment, providing conservation and educational programs.
Council warmly welcomes the Centre's newly elected Chair, former Hobsons Bay councillor and deputy mayor Pamela Sutton-Legaud, and deputy chair Jenny Britt, elected in November.
Council works closely with the Centre to conserve the important environment.
Early works of Stage One have recently been completed on development of the Centre's facility in Altona Meadows, with the area already attracting wildlife.
