- Tenants have started moving into 19 new social homes
- Homes are among 53,500 social homes to be delivered as part of Miles Government's Homes for Queenslanders plan
The Miles Government has completed 19 more social homes in Toowoomba.
The 13 one-bedroom units and six two-bedroom units in Newtown have been built to Platinum, Gold and Silver accessibility standards making them suitable for seniors and people with a disability.
The first tenants have already moved into their new homes with all units expected to be fully tenanted this month.
Another complex with 14 social homes in Newtown is expected to wrap up works in coming weeks.
Meanwhile, the sod was turned recently on a 23-home project in partnership between the Miles Government and Salvation Army.
All of these homes form part of the government's Homes for Queenslanders plan, which including bolstering social housing with 53,500 more homes.
As stated by Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon:
"These 19 homes and our $2.8 billion injection in the Budget for housing and homelessness proves that we're delivering more Homes for Queenslanders.
"Whether it's building homes in Toowoomba, working with businesses in Toowoomba to build modular homes or buying vacant retirement villages in Toowoomba – we're pulling all levers to help Queenslanders."
As stated by Managing Director and Founder of McNab Group Michael McNab:
"Everyone deserves a roof over their head, and we see this project as a great opportunity to work with the Queensland Government again, as well as to bring more housing online for Queenslanders.
"We're particularly pleased to be able to contribute again to addressing the ongoing high demand for social and affordable housing in Toowoomba and the Darling Downs."
As stated by Anne, a resident of the new development:
"I just love my new home! Previously, I lived in a four-bedroom home, but three of my four children have left home and getting on with their lives, so I had no need for a large house anymore and was very happy to make way for a family.
"Now that I'm living in a smaller home, not only is it easier to maintain, but it's also giving me lots of inspiration and incentive to cull years of hoarding; things that I just don't need.
"Also, I have a medical condition which is affecting my health more and more as I'm getting older. I'm so grateful the house has wide doorways and spacious living areas. It makes my everyday living a lot easier and I'm assured of being able to stay here for the long-term, which is such a comfort."
